Den třetí – Na čáře mezi Illinois a Missouri
Česko-slovenská výprava po Route 66 má dnešním dnem za sebou celou část cesty státem Illinois.
Ještě než jsme ale překonali monstrózní "hraniční" řeku Mississippi, vychutnali jsme si luxusní snídaňo-svačino-oběd v legendární restauraci "all-you-can-eat" (sněz-co-můžeš) Ariston Cafe provozované téměř 80 let rodinou Adamových. Po zjištění, že dorazila naše delegace, místní noviny vyzpovídaly vůdce naší tlupy Zdeňka Juráska. Cestou jsme míjeli nádherné drive-in kino, jediné podél Route66, které je ve státě Illinois stále v provozu.
Záměr navštívit restauraci byl rovněž strategický; hrozilo totiž, že vyhladovělá skupina cestovatelů doslova"vylidní" (sežere) králíky obývající další destinaci, Rabbit Ranch (králičí farma). Tak prudký nárůst náhrobních kamenů na králičím hřbitově by šéf farmy, Rich Henry, jen těžko rozchodil.
Naše kroky (přesněji pneumatiky auta motorek) nás dále vedly k majestátnému mostu Old Chain of Rocks Bridge z roku 1928, který spojuje oba břehy řeky Mississippi. Příjemná dvacetiminutová (!!!) procházka na střed mostu (a tedy i přesně na hranici států Illinois a Missouri) byla doprovázena znalým výkladem našich kamarádů z Route 66, Martyho a Geri Bilecki, kteří nás ovšem k lítosti všech v této fázi cesty po třech společně strávených dnech opustili a vrátili se domů do městečka Morris. Víme tak například, že tato unikátní stavba se v jedné části láme vúhlu 45 stupňů, neboť nestabilní podloží neumožnilo standardní, "rovnou" konstrukci.
Bez zajímavosti též není fakt, že v této části jeřeka Missisippi vůbec nejužší (a tudíž nejvhodnější pro propojení dvou břehů mostem), pričemž prvními staviteli původního mostu v těchto místech nebyli zkušení inženýři, ale původní obyvatelé - Indiáni. Jak zjistili, že zde je to správné místo, je ovšem mimo naše chápání. Pod námi kvanta vody valící se rychlostí témeř 100 kilometrů za hodinu a před námi - St Louis s monumentálním obloukem.
Třešničkou na dortu bylo milé večerní posezení s Jimem Roriem, skladatelem a zpěvákem, který za námi dorazil až z Memphisu. Bez doprovodu zapěl pár písní včetně "povinné" Get Your Kicks on Route 66 a po pár panácích popřál příjemně unaveným cestovatelům Good night.
Day 3 – At the line between Illinois and Missouri
By now, our Czech and Slovak Route 66 expedition has travelled across the whole state of Illinois.
Before crossing the gigantic Mississippi river at the border between Illinois and Missouri, however, we had once again pampered ourselves with a great debauchery eating a gorgeous breakfast-snack-lunch combo at the legendary all-you-can-eat Ariston cafe operated for nearly 80 years by the Adam family. On discovering the presence of our crew in town, local paper showed up to make an interview with the one and only Zdenek Jurasek, the commander-in-chief of our association.
On the way there, we had driven past a classy drive-in theater, a unique attraction along the Illinois part of Route 66 and the only one that is still open for public in the Land of Lincoln. Our intention to drop by the restaurant had a strategic dimension too, as on an empty stomach lives of residents at our next stop, Rabbit Ranch, would be in great danger. It is highly unlikely that the sudden rise in the amount of tomb stones in the rabbit cemetery would not go unnoticed or would be particularly appreciated by the ranch owner, Rich Henry.
Our next steps (or better say the tires of cars and motos) led us to the majestic Old Chain of Rocks Bridge dating 1928 that connects both sides of the Mississippi river. A pleasant 20 minute (!!!) walk to the centre of bridge (and thus the exact borderline of Illinois and Missouri) was taken to the next level thank to a thorough commentary on the history of the bridge provided by Marty and Geri, our Route 66 friends, who, much to our regret, had to leave us at this stage to head back to their hometown of Morris having spent with us three marvelous days.
Thank to Marty we, for example, know that in one part the bridge is, angle-wise, bent in 45 degrees because of an unstable subsoil which did not allowed for a standard straight construction to be erected. Another interesting piece of trivia was, in this particular part the bed of Mississippi is the narrowest and therefore the most suitable for connecting both sides with a bridge.
In the evening the icing on the cake was meeting Joe Rorie, songwriter and singer, who'd come all the way from Memphis and sung for us, acapella, a few songs, including a must-sing song GetYour Kicks on Route 66 and after a nice long chat told us, tired travellers, his good night.
